Brahmins found no support from MLAs, thakur lobby stood united

  • | Thursday | 23rd February, 2017

With nearly half of the total number of legislators standing in support of Ajay Singh, Congress had to sacrifice its caste equilibrium. "You would be writing the death certificate of the Congress party in Madhya Pradesh if Mukesh Nayak is made LoP," Congress MLAs told Ajay Maken. Once, Nayak was out of the competition, Sundarlal Tiwari was the only other Brahmin choice but could not garner support of party MLAs. Long before CLP meeting started at state PCC office on the afternoon of February 20, these legislators gathered at the residence of Ajay Singh. Behind closed doors, legislators told AICC observer Ajay Maken that making Mukesh Nayak the LoP would prove disastrous for the Congress in the 2018 elections.

BHOPAL: Congress Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh state assembly will be led by 'thakurs' - an equation, the party wanted to avoid but couldn't seeing the strength of the faction supporting Ajay Singh. Former minister Rajendra Singh is deputy Speaker, Ajay Singh is leader of Congress legislative Party (CLP) and nearly all party MLAs in the front row opposite the treasury benches - including Dr Govind Singh, Arif Aqueel, KP Singh - are members of that powerful faction led by Digvijaya Singh.Support of 23 to 26 MLAs from the erstwhile Arjun Singh and present Digvijaya Singh lobby ensured the appointment of Ajay Singh as LoP. Long before CLP meeting started at state PCC office on the afternoon of February 20, these legislators gathered at the residence of Ajay Singh. They came to the Congress office together and walked-into the meeting displaying solidarity. After the 2013 assembly election debacle, the Congress had worked out a caste strategy to represent every community in the party. Rajendra Singh, a thakur, was given the position of deputy leader, Arun Yadav from the OBC community was made PCC chief, Brahmin Satyadev Katare was appointed LoP and Bala Bachchan a tribal became deputy LoP. Sources in the party said, AICC wanted to continue this caste equation and was looking for a Brahmin to succeed Satyadev Katare. There were two Brahmin faces being considered for the post - MLA from Pawai seat Mukesh Nayak and MLA from Gurh constituency Sundarlal Tiwari. Behind closed doors, legislators told AICC observer Ajay Maken that making Mukesh Nayak the LoP would prove disastrous for the Congress in the 2018 elections. "You would be writing the death certificate of the Congress party in Madhya Pradesh if Mukesh Nayak is made LoP," Congress MLAs told Ajay Maken. The reason - Nayak is a relative of a bureaucrat who is presently principal secretary to chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.Nayak's kin being close to the BJP chief minister made MLAs doubt his allegiance to the party. Once, Nayak was out of the competition, Sundarlal Tiwari was the only other Brahmin choice but could not garner support of party MLAs. With nearly half of the total number of legislators standing in support of Ajay Singh, Congress had to sacrifice its caste equilibrium.
