AHMEDABAD: The 16 lakes in Ahmedabad city which are mostly dried up will now see some treated drainage water flowing in these lakes. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has now decided that they would have a sewage treatment plant attached to each of the 16 lakes to ensure that they are filled with treated water.A pilot project was taken up in the Vastrapur lake . However, this was only of 0.5 million litres per day or 5 lakh litres per day. This was done with the intention of addressing the water needs of the garden surrounding the lake, but later it was found that the water was flowing in the lake only.“The percolation well of the lake is quite big and hence the 5 lakh litre of water which is released into the lake is recharging only the groundwater. The AMC earlier said it was not getting the desired biological oxygen demand and the chemical oxygen demand, but now the desired level has been reached. At present the water which is released has less than 10 BOD while COD was less than 50,” said a senior officer handling the project.Standing committee chairman Amul Bhatt said, “Earlier we had some issued with the STP at Vastrapur lake, but now we are getting the desired level of COD and BOD. We have already issued the tenders for setting up sewage treatment plants at all the 16 lakes in the city, but we will first evaluate the success of the Vastrapur STP and once the results are tabled, we will set up the STPs for all 16 lakes.”A senior officer said that filling the lake will not only ensure that the lake was full of water but will also help the corporation to take care of the sewerage generated from areas near the lake.The water will have to treated properly. The officer pointed out that at Pirana the treatment is sub-par and it is thus polluting the Sabarmati.
