AMC to begin nightly cleaning of city roads

The corporation will spend Rs 5.59 crore on this in the New West Zone. AHMEDABAD: The people of the Ahmedabad will soon wake up to clean roads, as the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to begin mechanised cleaning and cleaning by sanitation workers at night.The AMC has decided to take up night cleaning on pilot basis, in the New West Zone, which includes wards such as Bodakdev, Jodhpur, Thaltej, Satellite, Vejalpur and Gota, among others. The AMC will procure more equipment and roll out these operations in other parts of the city as well, as the corporation has adequate staff.According to a senior AMC officer, this is the first time the civic body will take up cleaning at night.

AHMEDABAD: The people of the Ahmedabad will soon wake up to clean roads, as the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to begin mechanised cleaning and cleaning by sanitation workers at night.The AMC has decided to take up night cleaning on pilot basis, in the New West Zone, which includes wards such as Bodakdev, Jodhpur, Thaltej, Satellite, Vejalpur and Gota, among others. The AMC’s night cleaning plan will be in action at the end of the year or early next year.Municipal commissioner Vijay Nehra said, “The modalities have been worked out and tenders have been invited. The corporation will spend Rs 5.59 crore on this in the New West Zone. The zone is divided into the North West Zone and South West Zone. The civic body will ask the contracted agency to deploy 450 sanitation workers and road sweeping machines in the 150-square-km area.”The commissioner said two sanitation workers will work along with each machine and will be responsible for sides of the road and the pedestrians lanes, where the machine cannot operate.Nightly cleaning will be taken up on all bridges and roads that are 24 metres wide as well. The staffer working in the area presently will then focus on smaller roads and bylanes. Nehra said, “The cleaning at night will be first begun in the 1.20 lakh sq metres of the North West Zone, which includes Ghatlodia, Thaltej, Gota Bodakdev, Chandkheda and 37,000 square metres in Sarkhej, Maktampura, Jodhpur and Vejalpur.The commissioner added that the AMC us studying other available equipment which can be used to clean the walled city areas. The AMC will procure more equipment and roll out these operations in other parts of the city as well, as the corporation has adequate staff.According to a senior AMC officer, this is the first time the civic body will take up cleaning at night.
