600 medical seats to be added in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: It is good news for medical aspirants as from the upcoming academic year onwards, some 600 more medical seats will be added in the state. Gujarat is home to some 24 medical colleges, which offer admissions to some 4,000 students.This year, three new medical colleges had applied for permission to admit students, with 150 seats each, while Chandkheda-based K M Shah Medical College, had applied for admissions to 150 seats last year.So far, the process of inspection has been completed at the colleges in Chandkheda, Nadiad and Visnagar. Sources said that this will give colleges another chance to make necessary amends on the lacunae, if any, which are pointed out during the first round of inspection. The fourth medical college which had applied for permission to begin with admissions, was in Amreli, wherein the apex body is yet to complete inspection.K M Shah Medical College had applied for permission to admit some 150 students last year, but did not get permission to begin with the academic process then.Last month, transfers of some 200 faculty members was done across Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS)-run medical colleges in Vadnagar, Himmatnagar, Gotri and Valsad, among others. This was undertaken to ensure that the academic procedures are in accordance with the norms, so that there is no further reduction in seats across any of these colleges.In fact, state health department was also proactive in notifying institutes to ensure complete attendance of faculty members, especially those who have been transferred, stating that Gujarat cannot further afford to lose out on medical seats.Yet another round of inspection across medical colleges will also be undertaken by the apex body in March next year.
