HK in-charge principal quits over Mevani event

The trustees cancelled permission to give the hall for the event on Sunday, triggering a major controversy.In-charge principal Hemant Shah said he resigned in protest as he strongly feels the trustees should not have succumbed to pressure. "I perceived trustees denying us permission for the hall for annual function as an attack on individual freedom, our freedom to teach and our right to express. We felt that as an institution, we failed to stand by our students. I resigned immediately." The trustees, which included president and 2018 Pritzker prize winner B V Doshi and vice-president Padma Shri Kumarpal Desai, backed off at the last minute after ABVP leaders from Gujarat University called up the trustees and threatened to disrupt the function if Mevani stepped on the campus.

AHMEDABAD: For the first time in the history of HK Arts and Commerce college, the institution's in-charge principal and vice-principal resigned after Gujarat Vidyasabha trustees denied permission to hold the college's annual function on Monday where Dalit leader and Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani was invited as chief guest.Mevani is an alumnus of the college and was invited to speak on Babasaheb Ambedkar's life and mission, Bhagat Singh , and also on Mevani's own journey in public life.
