The road and building committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Monday approved infrastructure works worth Rs 307 crore. The water and sewage committee too sanctioned works of over Rs 175 crore. The announcements were made just before the general elections. Before the state assembly elections in 2017, the committee had approved works worth more than Rs 400 crore. Two multi-level parking projects have been approved which will be developed near Sindhu Bhavan and at Prahladnagar. The parking complex near Sindhu Bhavan would cost the civic body Rs 97 crore. "The parking would have a basement, a ground floor and five storeys. It would have a parking capacity of 743 cars and 830 two-wheelers. It would also contain 16 shops and 38 office spaces," said Ramesh Desai, chairman of the road and building committee. "We have approved another parking lot at Prahladnagar which would have two basements, a ground floor and eight storeys. It will accommodate 404 cars and 474 two-wheelers. This unit too will have commercial space for 16 shops and 38 offices," added Desai. Interestingly, works worth more than Rs 190 crore were presented and the discussion on the projects did not last longer than 40 minutes. Criticising the same, former leader of opposition Badruddin Shaikh said that this is fundraising activity being done by the ruling BJP. "What was the urgency to introduce the parking works? If the work was announced in the budget then why were the civic officials waiting for so many months to invite bidders? How come the work has been announced just ahead of the general elections?" Shaikh asked. "Functioning of AMC officials and the ruling party BJP is arbitrary," added Shaikh.
