AHMEDABAD: Vaidehi Rajgor would turn 24 on May 30 this summer. Her father, however, is pleading before the Gujarat high court to put an end to her 'miserable life' claiming that she is nothing but a "living dead body".Devendra Rajgor, who runs a medical store in the city, has moved the HC seeking permission for 'passive euthanasia ' for Vaidehi who suffers from cerebral palsy , a neurological condition which causes permanent movement disorders in patients. It is reported to be one of the most common forms of childhood disability.Rajgor's advocate Anvesh Vyas relied on the 2018 Supreme Court order which has permitted passive euthanasia for terminally ill patients by removing life-support system. He has requested the HC to direct medical authorities to examine Vaidehi's case and constitute a committee to prepare a report on her disease on basis of which the court can further direct authorities to put an end to her life.On hearing the case on Wednesday, Justice A Y Kogje sought reply from the state government and the medical superintendent of the Civil Hospital on the issue. Further hearing is posted on April 3.In his petition, Rajgor submitted that Vaidehi is elder of his two daughters, born on May 30, 1995. Six months after her birth, the family came to know that she was suffering from Cerebral Palsy which has no cure. Rajgor said Vaidehi's condition has been worsening with every passing day. She has been confined to bed since her birth as is dependent on family members to move her from one place to another. The father submitted further that her daughter is in no position to recover from this illness and would have to spend her entire life in the same condition. “The problem is not less than curse for her. She is able to understand but her body does not support her. This is a pitiable condition for her as well as for her family members,” he stated and added, “In other words, she is no more than a living dead body.” The demand from Vaidehi’s father seems to have manifested from the parents’ frustration and concern for their daughter's future as advocate Vyas said that mother is diabetic and the father has recently detected with a brain tumour.
