In a unique workshop aimed at tapping innovative methodology for classroom teaching, over 100 educators from Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar will undergo a day-long training on how to inculcate theatre while teaching regular subjects in schools. The workshop, organised by Karnavati University, will be conducted by theatre stalwart and Sahitya Akademi award winner Mahesh Dattani on Saturday in which he will teach the teachers and principals about effective teaching through fascinating techniques of drama. Speaking about the same, Ritesh Hada, president, Karnavati University said, "As our various activities, we have been working with schools across the country. Hence, we wanted to do something to benefit the schools by organizing a workshop which is very relevant in the present times. Importance of theatre in education is not a new concept but we want it to reach as many schools as it can. Also, this kind of a workshop is a good opportunity for educators to exchange and share ideas." Interestingly, recently, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has also mandated art education for Classes I to XII. The board, in a circular, said, "Art education will be taught as a mandatory subject for Classes I to XII and facilities for the same may be provided in every school. Every school shall compulsorily reserve a minimum of two periods per week, per class, for art education. All the four main streams covered by the term arts, such as music, dance, visual arts and theatre, should be included." The CBSE also cited an example of how art education could be integrated with teaching of other subjects. It is possible to teach about the planets in the universe or forests and oceans through art by asking each child to choose a planet/forest/ocean and making a travel brochure on it, the board said. Nikhil Gohil, a primary school teacher in a village in Dangs, has adopted innovative means to teach children. He says, "Since I deal with tribal children, they were facing difficulty in understanding concepts of mathematics. So, I enacted a play through which they are being taught subtraction, division, multiplication and calculating percentage." New Mandate
