Even as few days are still left for the monsoon to reach Ahmedabad, the city on Monday received heavy showers at around 1 am combined with lightning and high-velocity winds that brought the soaring maximum temperature down by over 5 degrees Celsius. While the heavy showers provided the much-required relief, the Met office has clarified that the rainfall was not due to monsoon, but due to a trough at mean sea level persisting from west Rajasthan to east central Bay of Bengal that resulted in rainfall at several places across north Gujarat. Meteorologist Manorama Mohanty told DNA that conditions are favourable for the onset of monsoon in south Gujarat, but the onset of monsoon will take another 24-48 hours. She clarified that north Gujarat received rainfall at several places due to the trough, but there is no major rainfall in south Gujarat. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), the northern limit of southwest monsoon is currently passing through Alibagh, Malegaon, Khandwa, Chindwara, Mandla, Pendra, Sultanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Mukteshwar. Apart from the trough, a cyclonic circulation has also formed over south Gujarat and neighbourhood, which is going to bring in rains at several places across the state including Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath, and Rajkot. Mohanty, however, clarified that chances are less for the cyclonic circulation to intensify and it is going to cause only light to moderate showers along with thunderstorms. She added that the impact of the cyclonic circulation is likely to remain till the next 24-48 hours, with Ahmedabad and its adjoining areas likely to receive light to moderate showers. The maximum temperature in the city is expected to be around 36-37 degrees Celsius during the next 4-5 days, while it was 33.5 degrees Celsius on Monday.
