Members of the Thakor community in Gujarat's Banaskantha district have barred unmarried women from carrying a mobile phone, calling it a "social evil". It will also fine parents of youngsters going for inter-caste marriages. The diktat was recently passed by residents of 12 villages in Dantiwada tehsil, said sources. According to the order, if a young woman is caught using mobile phones, her father will be held responsible. In the case of inter-caste marriages, the community elders have decided to impose a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh on the father of a girl and Rs 2 lakh on the boy's father, said sources. Some member denied the restrictions. "Our community has not come up with such a diktat. We only talked of keeping young girls from mobile phones. We never said anything about our boys and girls marrying in other community," said a Thakor community member, wishing not to be identified. Congress MLA Ganiben Thakor, however, said she saw nothing wrong in the move. They should stay away from the technology and spend more time studying. With inputs from agencies
