Ahmedabad police nab 55 offenders amid overspeeding drive

A day after Ahmedabad Police Commissioner's notification on curbing speed limit, a total of Rs 24,500 fine was collected from 55 overspeeding offenders during a drive launched by city traffic police on Tuesday. According to police officials, the drive against overspeeding was conducted on the outskirts of the city during peak hours between 8 am to 12 pm. Tejas Patel, DCP traffic said, "During the six hours of drive, our officials were able to nab down 55 people, who were found violating the notification. Stating the overall scenario of overspeeding till July 2019, DCP Patel said, "We have already registered 625 cases of overspeeding. Post police commissioners notification, we are going to be stricter and will enforce more staff to control the overspeeding menace."

Five teams of traffic police were deployed at the Auganaj circle, Nirmal University road, Vishal circle, Odhav ring road and Khotarpur road to conduct the campaign. Tejas Patel, DCP traffic said, "During the six hours of drive, our officials were able to nab down 55 people, who were found violating the notification. The overall fine collected in 6 hours was around Rs 24,500." DCP Patel adding further on the overspeeding drive said, "We are going to continue the drive at night as well, which will be held from 8 pm to 12 am as commuters are likely to Overspeed during the late hours. There is a possibility we might end up fining more violaters during the night time." As per the Motor Vehicle Act, the first-time offender is fined Rs 400 fine or 6 months jail, while repeated offenders have to pay Rs 1000 fine or 2 years in jail. Cops have also arrested repeated offenders during the first day of the drive. Stating the overall scenario of overspeeding till July 2019, DCP Patel said, "We have already registered 625 cases of overspeeding. Post police commissioners notification, we are going to be stricter and will enforce more staff to control the overspeeding menace."
