Amid the government`s constant announcement that the railways will not be privatized, top railway officials have decided to run private trains in the country. The Railway Board had recently announced to run 151 private trains in the next 3 years on Route 109, dividing the country into 12 clusters.
Amid the government`s constant announcement that the railways will not be privatized, top railway officials have decided to run private trains in the country. The Railway Board had recently announced to run 151 private trains in the next 3 years on Route 109, dividing the country into 12 clusters. Now the railway authorities have gone one step further and announced the allotment of railway space to private train operators to build maintenance depots in major cities for the maintenance of these private trains.
Similarly, if there is space in railway depots, space can also be allotted to private companies. Currently, zonal officers have been instructed by higher officials to select the site for the depot and inform the Railway Board. Maintenance depots will also be set up at Mumbai for Sabarmati (Ahmedabad) and Surat as well as other trains in Gujarat.
As per the condition of the railways, all the responsibility including supervision and maintenance of private trains running across the country including Ahmedabad will be with the private company. Maintenance of each train will be done after 7000 kms. Currently all these trains will be operated by a private company for 35 years. About 36 trains have arrived in Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, in the route selected for private trains across the country. Railways have sought RFQs from corporates for the operation of these private trains. The RFQ will open in March 2021.
The maximum speed will be 160 kmph. The train to be started by private companies will have a minimum speed of 16 coaches and maximum speed will be 160 kmph. All these private train drivers and guards will be from the railways. Private companies will be responsible for providing ticket booking as well as parcel booking and other passenger facilities in this train. While the railways will charge holage charge, energy charge as well as fare from the private company.
