The Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) on Tuesday began serving notices to businesses and entire buildings still lacking full-fledged fire safety systems as mandated by the Gujarat Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2013.

The Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) on Tuesday began serving notices to businesses and entire buildings still lacking full-fledged fire safety systems as mandated by the Gujarat Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2013.

They must install or fix their fire safety systems within 15 days and apply for a Fire Safety Certificate which has replaced the Fire NOC.

A statement from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on June 15 said that the owners or occupiers of buildings who have been serviced with notices will have to comply with the law and apply for the certificate.

If they do not do so by the time period mandated in the notice, penal action will be initiated against them in accordance with the
2013 Act.
A senior official told Mirror that these notices were being sent out now since it would be easier for the hospitals and schools to comply. Earlier, since many hospitals had Covid patients, refitting and installation of fire safety systems was not possible.

Similarly, all schools were also closed. Now, with patients becoming fewer after the plague of the second Covid wave and schools beginning to function with minimum strength, fire safety compliance is expected to be smoother and faster.

Mirror spoke to Deputy CFO Jayesh Khadia, who said, “We have issued notices under section 10 (B) the 2013 law which mandates compliance to fire safety norms within 15 days of the notice being served.”

When asked about the notices which had been served earlier, Khadia said, “While many of those served notices earlier had completed their fire safety obligations, we do not have exact figures at the moment as data compilation is under way.

However, these notices now are for strict compliance and action will be taken against those who violate the law.”
