Construction work for the CNG-based cremation incinerator is already in full swing under the streetlights department, costing around Rs 52.17 lakh.

The crematorium - the first of its kind in the state - will be used for the cremation of birds and animals of the zoo exclusively, mentioned zoo officials on Thursday.

A period of four-five months has been stipulated for the completion of the proposed crematorium for animals at the Kamla Nehru Zoo at Kankaria, Ahmedabad.

Construction work for the CNG-based cremation incinerator is already in full swing under the streetlights department, costing around Rs 52.17 lakh.

No proposal for allowing registered pets to be cremated here for a fixed fee is currently under review, as reported by the Times of India.

The Central Zoo Authority received the proposal back in 2019, for which the grants were also allotted at the time. A senior AMC official said, "This will be an exclusive crematorium for resident animals and birds at the zoo."

Up until now, smaller animals and birds that would pass away in the zoo would be buried while the bigger ones would be cremated using firewood, as per zoo officials.

RK Sahu, the zoo superintendent, said, "The new crematorium will be exclusively meant for birds and animals of the zoo. There is no proposal to allow other registered pets to be cremated here. The crematorium is expected to be completed by four-five months," as per TOI.

Sahu added that this crematorium is definitely the first of its kind in the state, with only four-five such facilities existing in the entire country. A very few birds and animals die every year at the zoo, and the new facility will be extremely helpful.
