Railways to launch app for onboard crime plaints

JAIPUR: Emphasising on the need of providing better security and safety to passengers, Arun Kumar, director general, Railway Protection Force (RPF) on Sunday said that railways is coming up with an app to facilitate passengers in getting their complaints registered relating to crime on board.Kumar was on a one-day visit to the NWR headquarters where he had visited the barracks of the RPF jawans and held meeting with the RPF officials of various divisions of the NWR. On the clash of jurisdiction between GRP and RPF when a crime takes place onboard, Kumar, said, “Earlier DG, RPF used to take an annual meeting with government railway police (GRP) officials. For past four years this meeting has not taken place. We will organise this meeting for effective coordination.”“Most importantly we are working on an app through which passenger who has became a victim of any crime on board would be able to register and intimate the authorities concerned while the train is passing through X or Y station. Thereafter, the officials from RPF and GRP will act accordingly,” Kumar said. “The crime will be noticed and registered at the place itself where the train is moving,” he added.Kumar added that RPF earlier was merely confined to the guarding of the railway property but now they have got a responsibility of passengers’ safety too. “For various crimes of Indian Penal Code (IPC) RPF does not have the power of investigation and prosecution. But, yes, we have now prioritised the safety of passengers and of their belongings,” Kumar added. Kumar took charge as DG, RPF on October 1 and since then he has been visiting various zonal headquarters. “After I took charge we have curbed the black marketing and touting of tickets. In a campaign against them we have so far arrested 1,000 people and tickets worth nearly Rs 12 crore were seized,” he added.He added boundary walls would be raised at accident-prone spots along rail tracks to stop people from crossing in those areas. “RPF at various zones will identify such areas and will intimate about them to the zonal GMs. After identification of such locations awareness programmes, campaigns and construction of walls would be done,” Kumar added. Kumar said after identifying such locations permanent boundary walls will be constructed.
