Boxes to dispense free condoms in Sangam city

ALLAHABAD: In a first, condom dispensing boxes have been made available at all primary and community health centres, urban PHCs and health sub-centres to offer condoms free of cost.These boxes are being installed under the Mission Parivar Vikas (MPV) scheme acknowledging the high fertile rate (HFR) in the district. The boxes are of varying sizes, depending on the population of couples in the area.Under Mission Parivar Vikas, the state health authorities have selected as many as 57 of the state’s 75 districts, including Allahabad, where fertility rate is quite high.In Allahabad, the total fertility rate ( TFR ) currently stands at 3.1 while government plans to bring it down to 2.1 by 2020.District programme manager (National Health Mission) V K Singh said, “ The health department aims to bring the total fertility rate (TFR) of Allahabad down and for that condom dispensing boxes have been installed at all the 20 community health centers, 61 primary health centers , 551 sub-centers and 22 urban PHCs.”A recent health department survey report revealed that there are over 50,000 condom users in the district alone.A good number of users generally hesitate to purchase condoms from medical stores.
