Allahabad University appoints returning officer for AUSU polls

ALLAHABAD: After completing the admission process for undergrdaute and postgraduate courses, authorities of the Allahabad University announced the name of the returning officer (RO) on Monday to conduct the students' union election for the 2018-19 academic session.Prof R K Upadhyay of the Department of Defence Studies has been appointed RO for the next AUSU elections . Similarly, candidates shall not have a previous criminal record, that is to say he/she shall not have been tried and or convicted of any criminal offence or misdemeanor. The candidate shall also not have been subjected to any disciplinary action by the varsity authorities.However, it would be interesting to see whether the varsity authorities can make the aspirants follow the regulations.Going by the experience of the last several years, varsity authorities have failed to comply with the regulations and the candidates have openly flouted the norms, be it the limit of Rs 5000 for campaigning or distributing of printing materials or for that sake use of SUV’s. He has been appointed by the registrar on the recommendation of VC Prof RL Hangloo.“I have received the letter from the registrar and would soon be holding meeting with all the stake holders including those from AU and also from the constituent colleges who would be holding the elections simultaneously”, said Prof Upadhayay.Although, the university has not yet announced the detail schedule for holding the elections but highly placed sources told TOI that the same would be held in the last week of September and would conclude within the first week of October.However, AU authorities have made it clear that students’ polls would be held strictly according to the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee which is followed in letter and spirit in the constitution of students union of AU.Among various points mentioned in the constitution, every student of AU will get just one opportunity throughout his stay as a bonafide student to contest for the post of an office bearer and shall have two opportunity for the post of executives.
