TIRUPATI: The Centre for Democracy society has formed a three men committee to enquire into the police cases being booked against the opposition parties and the civil society groups across the state of Andhra Pradesh.Addressing a press conference at the Tirupati press club on Saturday, former Chief election commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar and former Chief secretary LV Subramanyam found fault in the manner in which the police department was slapping cases against anyone voicing dissent against the state government policies.Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar observed that there was an intolerant atmosphere prevailing in the state wherein political criticism and political difference of opinion is not given any space at all in a democratic way.LV Subramanyam found fault in the manner in which police Act was enforced almost across the state and preventive arrests of opposition parties and members of the civil society groups were happening indiscriminately."The constitution has given us the freedom to rights with certain restrictions. While the citizens should be allowed to enjoy these rights provided to them by the constitution, it is unfortunate that the law enforcers themselves are creating hurdles to the citizens and the opposition parties by deviating from the set provisions of the constitution", the former Chief secretary lamented. The centre for democracy representatives said the fact finding committee constituted today, will enquire into the fake cases allegations levelled against the state government and the police department in the coming days in order to ensure a free an fair elections in the state, which is due shortly. The CFD representatives alao said that one conference will be held in Tirupati tomorrow and a round table conference will be held at Vijayawada on December 13 to seek complaints and feedback from the public, intellectuals and the opposition parties on various undemocratic practices and police excesses prevailing in the state.
