Key members of society discuss ways to end crisis

“Through the citywide solid waste management campaign Bajaj Majhi City Taka Tak we have been able to establish that waste management can be achieved through public participation and segregation at source without spending much. However, now that it has been unanimously decided, a six-month plan has been jotted with the discussions held during the meeting. “We have been working for the last two years in this area and were able to achieve positive results too. The AMC should focus on how this can be strengthened through their proactive role. If the state and Centre’s officials found it so impressive why not the local body,” he said.Gauri Mirashi, the founder of Civic Response Team that spearheaded the waste management drive, said that the meeting gave an opportunity to the residents to interact with the sanitary staff of the municipal corporation.

Aurangabad: Citizens, representatives from the industries’ body, Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and social organisations on Saturday jointly conducted a brainstorming session held to solve the ongoing waste crisis in the city.The session was held at CMIA building where a six-month plan was unanimouly approved that will work towards solid waste management through reduction, recycling and composting of segregated waste.Advisor of corporate social responsibility at Bajaj Auto, CP Tripathi, said that the citizens of Aurangabad, the sanitation workers of the AMC and the social entrepreneurs have practically and successfully demonstrated a sustainable and low-cost model of solid waste management over the last two years. “Through the citywide solid waste management campaign Bajaj Majhi City Taka Tak we have been able to establish that waste management can be achieved through public participation and segregation at source without spending much. Even though, the waste management is in crisis, fire-fighting approach will not work and there has to be a strategic approach to this,” Mirashi, an expert of solid waste management said.The participants also felt that a safe and dignified working conditions for sanitation staff and residents of the city and Naregaon are crucial and therefore the waste management plan must ensure that they are met.
