Net services shut for seven hours in Aurangabad rural areas

AURANGABAD: To check rumours over social media, the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) in charge of Khuldabad and Kannad talukas has ordered the closure of Internet services for seven hours everyday. In his order, the SDM has said that there were reports of individuals or group of people being attacked by villagers. At some places, local residents were catching hold of individuals or groups purely on suspicion.The companies that provide Internet services have been expressly warned of stern action if they violate the order. He said this was brought to his notice by Niraj Rajguru, sub-divisional police officer of the Kannad-Khuldabad division.Rajguru had requested for a ban on Internet services in the particular areas for a few hours. Khuldabad taluka is located about 30km from the city and Kannad taluka about 60km away.The rumours were being spread mainly through social medial as well as word of mouth.

The order, which was implemented from 7pm on Thursday, will remain effective in the two talukas till June 20.The rumours were allegedly prompting attacks on people, particularly strangers, suspecting them to be dacoits, thieves or members of criminal gangs. Khuldabad taluka is located about 30km from the city and Kannad taluka about 60km away.The rumours were being spread mainly through social medial as well as word of mouth. In his order, the SDM has said that there were reports of individuals or group of people being attacked by villagers. He said this was brought to his notice by Niraj Rajguru, sub-divisional police officer of the Kannad-Khuldabad division.Rajguru had requested for a ban on Internet services in the particular areas for a few hours. He claimed that the rumours were found to be gaining momentum during the later hours of the day.The police have found that rumours making rounds on social media were causing fear as well as leading to serious concern among local residents. At some places, local residents were catching hold of individuals or groups purely on suspicion.The companies that provide Internet services have been expressly warned of stern action if they violate the order.
