Civic chief suspends deputy for delay in clearing encroachments

Aurangabad: Municipal commissioner Nipun Vinayak on Wednesday suspended deputy municipal commissioner Ravindra Nikam for ignoring his instructions on removing encroachments in Jaibhawani nagar area. Corporators raised similar issues in their wards asking the administration to take appropriate steps to avoid spread of diseases. “It was very unfortunate that this happened due to the negligence of the civic officials concerned. The encroachments have choked the nullah, resulting in inundation after a spell of heavy showers on Tuesday.Several houses have come up next to the nullahs, while some were built in it. When this issue was brought to the notice of Vinayak, who recently took over as municipal commissioner, he had directed Nikam on June 11 to take steps to remove the obstructions.In the suspension letter issued to Nikam, Vinayak has referred to the death of Bhagwan More (45), who drowned in the nullah on Tuesday.

Since Nikam was found guilty of neglecting his duty, he was being suspended,” the letter states.Corporators and residents from Jaibhawani nagar had demanded removal of encroachments in and around the nullah that were blocking the natural flow of the rivulet that passes through the area.Sources in the civic body said that Nikam had actually launched a drive to clear the encroachments, but didn’t remove all structures. This led to the grim situation when the city experienced heavy rains for about 45 minutes.Meanwhile, in a damage control bid, mayor Nandu Ghodele declared in the general body that an assistance of Rs 5 lakh would be given to More’s family and instructed the administration to provide them with a piece of land in Harsul area.He also asked the municipal commissioner to pay personal attention to inquiry into the incident and regretted that it was due to the negligence of the civic officials that More lost his life.The general body also discussed issues regarding water contamination, particularly in Harsul-Sawangi area, due to the dumping of waste at octroi naka. Corporators raised similar issues in their wards asking the administration to take appropriate steps to avoid spread of diseases.
