AURANGABAD: MIM corporator Syed Mateen faced the wrath of the BJP and Shiv Sena leaders in the house for opposing the civic administration's move to pay tributes to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the general body meeting on Friday. The general body of the Aurangbad Municipal Corporation has also passed a resolution to cancel Mateen's membership and the mayor has directed the civic body's security officer to lodge a complaint against the MIM corporator for attempting to create enmity between two communities. The MIM, in the meantime, has distanced itself from the corporator's act saying that he acted against the party's official stand."We respect Vajpayeeji and had decided to allow the programme to be conducted smoothly. But Mateen suddenly stood up and asked the mayor to register his opposition to the homage being paid to Vajpayeeji. We don't approve of his action," said Naser Siddiqui, the MIM group leader in the civic body. The special general body meeting had been scheduled to discuss the re-entry of the private company to take over the parallel water supply project. The civic body had earlier terminated the company's contract. However, in the wake of Vajpayee's demise, the general body decided to pay tribute to him.The programme began with BJP corporator Dilip Thorat addressing the members. Then, a 20-minute film on Vajpayee was screened in the house. Subsequently, Shiv Sena leader Raju Vaidya spoke. After Vaidya, Mateen got to his feet and expressed his opposition to the general body move saying "We have not forgotten Babri Masjid."This evoked sharp reactions from the BJP corporators, who pounced on Mateen and started beating him up. They were joined by the Sena members in the house, while no other MIM corporator intervened. Finally, the security guards in the house managed to separate Mateen from the angry corporators and whisked him away. The mayor adjourned the meeting for five minutes after the incident. After the house resumed its operations, the general body passed a resolution proposing permanent termination of Mateen's membership. Municipal commissioner Nipun Vinayak then appointed a two-member committee comprising additional commissioner D P Kulkarni and legal advisor Aparna Thete to examine the resolution and prepare a proposal to be sent to the government for terminating Mateen's membership.Later, Mateen told reporters that he wanted to democratically register his opposition to the civic body's move. "The BJP corporators indulged in hooliganism and attacked me. The mayor should take an action against these corporators for insulting the house," he said.
