25-yr-old man held for assaulting cops

Aurangabad: A 25-year-old history sheeter was arrested by city police on Sunday night for assaulting policemen, who asked him to get down from the wall of a well, in Santoshimata Nagar area of the city during Ganpati immersion.The suspect — identified Vicky alias Helmet Sonkamble, a resident of Mukundwadi —after being made to get down from the well got agitated and assaulted the cops. He was, however, overpowered and taken to the police station. But his antics did not stop and at the police station he allegedly injured himself using the tea cups.According to police, Vicky came near the well drunk and started bothering others present to watch the immersion procession. “He scaled upon the parapet wall of a well. A police naik saw him and requested him to get down. This infuriated the suspect and he started abusing the policeman. Soon other on-duty policemen came to the spot, but Vicky continued with his act,” a police officer said.“During the assault, a policeman was punched on the chest and his shirt was torn. After arresting him, the suspect was made to sit in a room at the police station. He then started threatened to take his own life and used the tea cups kept in the room to inflict injuries on his forehead. He was later shifted to another room. A case was registered against him at 9.45pm. Vicky was sent the Harsul jail under magisterial custody after he was produced before the judge on Monday,” he added.Police sub-inspector SP Bansod said Vicky is a hardened criminal with more than 20 serious crimes registered against him at various police stations of the city.“Some of them are theft, robbery, burglary, terrorizing gullible people and attacking people. He was repeatedly arrested and was asked to mend ways, but it did not help. Owing to the rising graph of his destructive activities he was banished from the district in October 2017 for two years. Still, he entered the city and assaulted policemen.”
