GMCH docs assured of safety, to return to work

Aurangabad: After resident doctors were twice assaulted in the past few days, junior doctors at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) had planned to stay away from work on Tuesday morning. “Following the complaint, an offence has been registered,” Adhe said.Of the hospital’s 285 resident doctors, 204 were on leave. As many as 36 surgeries were performed.Following meetings on Tuesday evening between GMCH authorities and representatives of resident doctors, agitating doctors said they would resume work from 10 pm on Tuesday. “In another 15 days, as per the demands of the doctors, the alarm system, CCTV system, hospital security and parking will be upgraded,” medical superintendent Bharat Sonawane said. However Beghumpura police station senior inspector Rajshri Adhe told TOI that GMCH authorities turned up to the police station on Tuesday and lodged a complaint.

However, after marathon meetings between the doctors and GMCH College Council, it was decided that the plan to skip work would be dropped.A resident of Osmanpura admitted in ward 7-8 of the medicine building at the hospital died on Sunday night, and his relatives then assaulted doctors, leading to tension in the hospital. Before Sunday’s matter died down, a 29-year-old woman under treatment for a swine-flu like disease died, and her relatives too assaulted doctors.Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) and resident doctors demanded that GMCH register a police complaint and take measures to ensure security of doctors at work. The doctors said until their demands were met, they would stay off work.GMCH dean Kanan Yelikar said a complaint was lodged on Monday. However Beghumpura police station senior inspector Rajshri Adhe told TOI that GMCH authorities turned up to the police station on Tuesday and lodged a complaint. “Following the complaint, an offence has been registered,” Adhe said.Of the hospital’s 285 resident doctors, 204 were on leave. Only 81 reported to work. On Tuesday, the hospital saw 1,756 patients in OPD, 129 in IPD and 53 in casualty.
