Mixed garbage at landfills could reduce city’s cleanliness rank

Section 7.2 of star rating for garbage free city handbook states that in order to qualify for rating 3 and above the city is required to have a sanitary landfill or zero landfill.The criterion mandates that only inert or reject material like stones and debris should be sent to the landfill. “Various tasks associated with raising awareness about the Swachh Bharat Mission, zero open defecation, collection and transportation of waste, processing and landfilling are given through the SS dashboard,” Jadhav said.The civic body is required to post pictures, documents, data as specified in a questionnaire that is distributed as part of the task.Being the last year ahead of the 2019 deadline for achieving the Swachh Bharat target, this year’s Survekshan has several new features.One key parameter is focussing on reduction of landfills. Aurangabad: Aurangabad Municipal Corporation, which is competing for the Swachha Survekshan 2019, may suffer a setback in the nationwide survey because of the dumping of unsegregated garbage at different points.Swachha Survekshan requires urban local bodies (ULBs) to ensure waste is segregated and that only what is rejected lands up at landfills.The annual survey to assess cleanliness on parameters of open defecation and solid waste management, which is part of the Narendra Modi government’s ambitious Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), has begun.According to SBM city coordinator Kiran Jadhav, ULBs are given tasks which they have to complete within five days.
