Aurangabad: An assistant sub-inspector attached to the Satara police station here was arrested by the Aurangabad unit of the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) for accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from an SRPF jawan here on Monday.The officer, Narayan Keshav Bharate (55), a resident of police colony in Hudco area of the city, was on Tuesday produced in a local court, which remanded him in judicial custody.Bharate was nabbed while he was taking the bribe at the Royal tea stall, opposite the Satara police station, said an ACB official. The official said that the wife of the jawan, who is serving with the state reserve police’s Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB), had recently lodged a complaint against him for domestic violence at the Satara police station.“The application was handed over to ASI Bharate for investigation, following which he summoned the jawan. He requested the officer to not lodge an offence against him and avoid bringing the matter to the notice of the IRB commandant as it would spoil his career,” said the ACB official.Taking advantage of the situation, Bharate allegedly demanded Rs 50,000 and started pestering the jawan for the money. The officer finally agreed to settle the issue for Rs 20,000, following which the jawan lodged a complaint with the ACB.Accordingly, a trap was laid outside the Satara area police station and the officer was nabbed soon after he accepted the powdered currency notes from the complainant. The ACB conducted a search at the residence of the police officer, but details about recovery of cash or valuables were not revealed.
