"We noticed that she not only had a problem in her left hip joint since childhood but her left knee joint had gradually deformed with age. "Apart from being a major weight bearing joint, the hip joint is also highly mobile and is very important for walking, sitting and squatting. Her condition was corrected through a two-phased surgery conducted over the last two months, said joint replacement surgeon Girish Gadekar , who was treating her. She had fallen from a height at her home in Yemen when she was 10 years old and had injured her hip joint. In the first stage, the left total hip replacement surgery was conducted.

AURANGABAD: Doctors at the Mahatma Gandhi Mission (MGM) Hospital have made it possible for a 29-year-old woman Yemeni woman to walk normally again and perform her usual chores after 18 years.Amal Mohammed was suffering from bony ankylosis of her left hip joint. Her condition was corrected through a two-phased surgery conducted over the last two months, said joint replacement surgeon Girish Gadekar , who was treating her. She had fallen from a height at her home in Yemen when she was 10 years old and had injured her hip joint. "Apart from being a major weight bearing joint, the hip joint is also highly mobile and is very important for walking, sitting and squatting. The accident had left Amal incapable of performing any of these activities," said Gadekar.Amal, who is unmarried, was referred to the MGM hospital by one of her family friends who had been treated in the hospital before. Four months ago, the woman was barely able to take a few steps on her own and was wheel-chaired to the hospital. "We noticed that she not only had a problem in her left hip joint since childhood but her left knee joint had gradually deformed with age. This caused the leg to overlap the right leg, making it almost impossible for her to stand or walk," said Gadekar.Gadekar, his assistant surgeon Gajanan Kathar and a team of anaesthetists and OT (operation theatre) staff conducted the surgery in two stages. In the first stage, the left total hip replacement surgery was conducted. "The hip replacement surgery was complex considering that there was no joint there but only bone across the joint and the muscles were also underdeveloped because she hadn't walked in 18 years. We had to use the dual mobility hip replacement system," said Gadekar. In the second stage, after six weeks, the bone above her knee joint was cut and correctly aligned so that the leg becomes straight. Both the surgeries were successful and four months later, Amal is walking and is able to sit comfortably.
