Drainage project dominates GB meet

Aurangabad: Cutting across party lines, corporators on Thursday lashed out at the civic administration over the Rs 260-crore underground drainage project which has resulted in waterlogging in many localities. The contractor has failed to repair the roads and clear the debris, causing severe inconvenience to citizens.The administration was also under fire for not making the contractor to complete the project work within the set deadline, that is by June 30. These officers, in a representation earlier to all the office-bearers and municipal commissioner, had requested that their suspension be revoked as they were under suspension for more than a year. Following the debate, the mayor gave a ruling postponing the proposal until the next meeting so that corporators could study the proposal.The corporators also slammed the administration over suspension of senior officers. He also refused to accept the administration's proposal to approve Rs 8 crore more for the work, saying that this issue would also be decided after the inquiry report is submitted.The mayor deferred a crucial civic body administration proposal to approve a new staffing pattern.

What added fuel to the fire was the civic administration's proposal to extend an additional Rs 8 crore for the project.Some of the corporators demanded that the project be cancelled as the contractor failed to meet the deadline and complete works like road repair after digging the entire city to lay the underground drainage pipeline.Mayor Bhagwan Ghadamode directed the formation of an inquiry committee to go into the whole affair and submit a report within seven days. He also refused to accept the administration's proposal to approve Rs 8 crore more for the work, saying that this issue would also be decided after the inquiry report is submitted.The mayor deferred a crucial civic body administration proposal to approve a new staffing pattern. As soon as the proposal, which was submitted at the last minute, came up for discussion, MIM corporator Sameena Shaikh questioned the logic behind the move.Shaikh said the staffing pattern issue is very important and that the corporators should be given time to discuss its different aspects.The other corporators also joined her and objected to the manner in which the administration came up with this crucial issue. Following the debate, the mayor gave a ruling postponing the proposal until the next meeting so that corporators could study the proposal.The corporators also slammed the administration over suspension of senior officers.
