Demolition despite HC stay sparks uproar

A demolition drive in Fiza Colony on Tuesday sparked chaos in the Nariyalkheda area of the state capital as irate residents accused officials of proceeding despite a High Court stay. Dozens of residents poured onto the streets after civic and police authorities arrived to demolish homes and shops. Residents claimed they had obtained a stay order from the Jabalpur High Court, valid until June 16, and were shocked by the action. The colony comprises about 15 to 20 houses, built on plots sold by a builder around four decades ago. Residents said they had lived there since then, with generations growing up and settling in the area. A dispute began when a woman raised concerns over land survey discrepancies, eventually winning a case that cast doubts on ownership. This legal victory prompted authorities to act, citing encroachment on government land. However, the affected families filed a fresh petition in the High Court, arguing for time to resolve the matter. The court reportedly issued a stay, yet the administration moved forward with the demolition drive. The sudden arrival of officials from the municipal corporation, three police stations, and the SDMs office left residents scrambling. Many showed the stay order to authorities on-site, pleading for a pause in the municipal action. Amid rising tensions, officials eventually backed off and promised to proceed according to legal directions.
