Crackdown on school buses, 126 violators caught

  • | Thursday | 15th May, 2025

In a knee-jerk reaction following a fatal accident in the state capital, the district administration on Tuesday launched a city-wide crackdown on school and college buses. Triggered by the tragic mishap at Banganga Square involving a school bus a day earlier, traffic police conducted a sweeping inspection across 19 major city locations. The drive, carried out under directives from the state government, resulted in the checking of nearly 410 buses. Of these, 126 buses were found in violation of various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. The police initiated action against these vehicles, citing concerns over passenger safety, vehicle conditions, and regulatory non-compliance. The campaign will continue till May 31, aiming to enforce safer practices in student transport. Police officials have appealed to the public to strictly follow traffic rules and refrain from using prohibited items in vehicles. Citizens facing any inconvenience related to traffic may contact the control room helplines at 0755-2677340 or 2443850. Similar moves from the traffic police had not gone down well with bus operators who are known to hold the city administration to ransom by resorting to strikes and throwing student transport out of gear.
