Police arrest IPS bus driver after deadly crash at Banganga square

  • | Friday | 16th May, 2025

TT Nagar Police have arrested the driver involved in the tragic school bus accident at Banganga Square on May 12, which resulted in the death of Dr. Ayesha Khan, critically injured two others, and left six others wounded. The driver had been absconding since the incident but was captured after a two-day manhunt in a village near Berasia. The accident occurred when the bus, which had an expired fitness certificate and lacked insurance, rammed into several vehicles that were stopped at the red light, including Dr. Ayeshas scooter. Police are investigating whether alcohol or a mechanical failure was responsible for the crash, with the drivers blood alcohol levels set to be tested. A major part of the investigation will focus on verifying the drivers qualifications, as it has been suggested that he might not have been properly licensed to operate the heavy vehicle. The police are also conducting a technical inspection of the bus to determine if brake failure contributed to the accident. The investigation uncovered a fraudulent "buyer-seller" affidavit that was backdated and created after the crash. Pravesh Nagar and Pradeep Pandey have been arrested in connection with the document forgery. The police also confirmed that the bus was operating illegally, as it lacked a valid fitness certificate, which expired in November 2024, and its insurance had not been renewed. As a result of these findings, Bhopal Divisional Commissioner Sandeep Singh has suspended RTO Jitendra Sharma for failing to ensure proper oversight of transport regulations. The case highlights the systemic failures in ensuring the safety and legality of public transportation in Madhya Pradesh. Investigators are working to determine the exact causes of the crash, with authorities calling for greater accountability in the enforcement of transport safety standards.
