Court to hear arguments in UC case today

  • | Friday | 16th May, 2025

A Bhopal court will on Thursday resume hearing arguments on whether Indian criminal courts have jurisdiction over Dow Chemical, the American parent company of Union Carbide. The case will be heard at 11 am before JMFC Hemlata Ahirwar. Union Carbide USA, held responsible for the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster, was declared an absconder by the Bhopal District Court in 1992 for failing to appear in the criminal proceedings. Since 2005, the CBI and the Bhopal Group for Information and Action have been pressing for Dow Chemical to face trial in India. On October 3, 2023, Dow Chemical appeared before the court for the first time. Since then, the company has repeatedly claimed that Indian courts lack jurisdiction over it, as it is based in the United States.
