Protest forces closure of alternate gate at Bagmugaliya liquor shop

  • | Tuesday | 20th May, 2025

A protest by residents forced the closure of a second illegal gate at an off-licence in the Bagmugaliya area of the state capital on Sunday afternoon. The protest broke out outside Fortune Delight Society, where residents gathered in large numbers. They alleged that the liquor shop had recently opened a second gate in a busy back lane that residents use to access groceries and other daily necessities. They described the opening of the gate as a security risk for women and children who use the lane throughout the day. Protest leaders said the shop was only licensed for a gate facing the main road. One protester called the second gate entirely illegal and a security hazard. They added that the new gate opens onto a congested market area with poor lighting. Its dangerous for pedestrians, especially women and children, she said, demanding its immediate closure. Residents echoed her concerns, saying the unlit lane had become cluttered with makeshift stalls. The crowd makes it difficult for women and kids to even walk through, said another resident. Under mounting public pressure, the second gate has been shut for now. But residents remain wary, fearing it may reopen if authorities do not intervene. They have warned that if the gate is reopened, they will escalate their protest. We are not against the shop, said one resident. But the second gate must go.
