Four drown in separate incidents in Vidisha district

  • | Tuesday | 20th May, 2025

Vidisha district witnessed two tragic drowning incidents on Sunday, claiming the lives of four individuals, including two youths and two children, underscoring growing concerns over water safety in the region. In the first incident at Halali Dam, two Bhopal residents, Firoz Khan (23) and Shahzad Khan (33), drowned while holidaying with friends. Officials reported that the victims slipped into deep water while cleaning utensils near the dams edge. The State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF) launched an immediate rescue operation upon receiving the alert. After strenuous efforts, our team recovered both bodies, confirmed SDERF Commandant Rashmi Dubey. The Kararia police have sent the bodies to Vidisha District Hospital for postmortem. In a separate tragedy on Saturday afternoon, two schoolchildren—Kartik Yadav (13) and Aryan Shakya (10)—drowned in a well in Amarpura village. The children had gone to pluck mangoes and decided to bathe in the well, located about 500 meters from the village. Shamshabad SDOP Ajay Mishra said, The children ventured into the deep waters of a well being converted into a small pond, despite shallow edges. Kartik, a Class VII pass-out, was the only child of a widow who lost her husband a year ago. Aryan, a Class V student, had never bathed in the well before, according to his grieving father Bablu Shakya. The Madhya Pradesh government has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh for each bereaved family. These incidents serve as a grim reminder of the hazards posed by monsoon season. Vidisha police have intensified patrolling around vulnerable water bodies, while SDERF continues to demonstrate swift rescue response. Authorities urge citizens to exercise extreme caution near water sources during the rainy season to prevent further tragedies.
