Denture stuck in food pipe removed without surgery at BMHRC

In a rare medical feat, doctors at Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) removed a denture lodged in a mans food pipe without surgery, saving his life through emergency endoscopy. The 54-year-old patient from Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, had been surviving on liquids and struggling to speak since he accidentally swallowed the denture. Repeated visits to hospitals in Lalitpur, Jhansi, Gwalior and Bhopal yielded no relief. Scans revealed a hard object – likely a false tooth – stuck in his oesophagus, or food pipe. Endoscopy attempts in Gwalior failed, and other hospitals recommended risky surgery. Doctors warned the procedure could be life-threatening due to the patients age and deteriorating condition. At BMHRC, however, the gastroenterology team, led by visiting consultant Dr Tripti Mishra, decided to perform an emergency endoscopy the same day. They safely extracted the denture without surgical intervention. Throughout the delicate procedure, the patient was closely monitored to prevent complications. The success was credited to the coordination between doctors, nurses and technicians involved in the operation. The patient is now able to eat normally and speak comfortably. BMHRCs acting director, Dr Manisha Srivastava, praised the teams timely action and skill. This case reflects our medical alertness, teamwork and technical expertise. Even in critical cases, we are committed to life-saving interventions without delay, she said.
