Late-night clash at Hamidia Hospital sparks staff safety concerns

  • | Saturday | 31st May, 2025

A late-night clash at Hamidia Hospital on Thursday reignited concerns over staff safety, echoing warnings raised earlier this week by the Junior Doctors Association. The incident occurred late in the evening, when an attendant accompanied by three women attempted to enter without a gate pass. Security stopped him, sparking a heated argument. According to hospital sources, the man was intoxicated and became aggressive when denied entry. The attendants family alleged that hospital staff, including junior doctors, beat him up over a minor issue. They called the incident hooliganism and accused security personnel of routinely misbehaving with visitors already under emotional distress. Hospital security in-charge Jayant Bhardwaj said the man was drunk and began abusing staff when confronted. He allegedly grabbed a security guards collar, pushed him, and continued shouting at doctors until police were called in. The police took the man into custody after he was examined by CMO Dr Virendra Singh. The crowd was dispersed without further escalation, and normality was restored within minutes, according to officials. Hospital authorities defended the actions taken by staff, saying drunk visitors pose a serious threat to patients and staff. Earlier this week, following the conclusion of elections, newly appointed executive members of the state Junior Doctors Association (JDA) had underlined the need for a more secure and supportive environment for the medical fraternity.
