Prime Minister to inaugurate Indore Metro today

  • | Saturday | 31st May, 2025

Indore takes a giant leap in urban mobility today as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the citys much-awaited metro rail, built on a smart, eco-conscious vision. The Indore Metro project was approved by the state government in December 2016 and received central cabinet clearance in October 2018. Construction began in February 2019, with the foundation stone laid in September that year. The entire Yellow Line will stretch 33.53 km with 29 stations and is expected to be fully operational by 2027. The initial section, now ready, spans 5.9 km along the Super Corridor from Gandhi Nagar to Super Corridor-3. This opening stretch includes five elevated stations: Gandhi Nagar, MR 10 Road, Super Corridor-1, Super Corridor-2 and Super Corridor-3. It will serve as a pilot section ahead of the networks full rollout. Each metro train has three coaches with a total capacity of around 980 passengers. Coaches are fully air-conditioned with seating for 50 and standing space for 300 per coach. The metro aims to reduce urban congestion and pollution while providing faster, safer and more comfortable travel. Stations and depots will run on solar power to cut electricity use. Passenger convenience is central to the design. All stations feature lifts, escalators, toilets and drinking water. Modern signalling, telecom systems and platform facilities ensure ease of use and efficient operations. Passenger safety is prioritised with high-definition CCTV surveillance and fire alarms installed at every station. Firefighting systems and emergency stop buttons are available on every train. Accessibility has been carefully planned. Braille panels, tactile tiles and wheelchair provisions support passengers with disabilities. Audio announcements and intercoms assist visually impaired passengers at all stages of travel. To encourage usage, the metro will offer free travel for one week, followed by discounted fares for the next three months, inviting the public to experience the new system. With a focus on sustainability, innovation and inclusivity, Indore Metro is set to redefine the citys transport landscape and further cement its place as one of Indias most forward-looking urban centres.
