Workshop proposes age-based safety index for women

A workshop at MANIT Bhopal has proposed an age-based safety ranking system to assess how secure tourist sites are for women. Clean toilets, clear signage, and inclusive planning emerged as top priorities. The five-day workshop, titled Assessment of Womens Safety at Tourist Sites, was hosted by the Department of Architecture and Planning at Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology. Coordinators Supriya Vyas,  Neha Pranav Kolhe, and Jagdish Singh led the initiative, which focused on designing gender-sensitive infrastructure and inclusive tourism policies. Insights were drawn from extensive field surveys covering a wide age spectrum—from teenage girls to elderly women. The findings identified thirteen key indicators of safety: clean and functional toilets, well-lit areas, accessible footpaths, clear signage, street furniture, and baby-care facilities. These needs, however, varied by age group. Teenagers prioritised lighting and CCTV-equipped areas. Young women wanted stronger security through surveillance and patrolling. Mothers stressed access to toilets and infant care rooms, while elderly women needed comfortable seating, railings, and ramps. Expert talks added depth to the findings. Dr Juhi Gupta from the Government Homoeopathic Medical College emphasised the need for sanitary kits, emergency medical support, and disaster preparedness. Breeze Tripathi, founder of Rakshita Welfare Society, discussed self-defence training and the role of social media and safety apps in raising awareness. The workshop concluded with a field survey at Bhopals Upper Lake, involving participants, stakeholders, and coordinators. It marked a step toward collaborative, action-oriented planning to make tourism safer and more inclusive for women at all life stages.
