Women first to travel on Indore Metro

  • | Monday | 2nd June, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the Indore Metro on Saturday, marking the historic 300th birth anniversary of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar with a tribute to progress. The inaugural ride began at 12.09 PM from the Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Terminal and reached Veerangana Jhalkari Bai Station at 12.20 PM, completing its return trip by 12.34 PM. Women were the first to board the metro, symbolising empowerment on a day dedicated to honouring the legacy of one of Indias most revered female rulers. The six-kilometre Yellow Line has been designated a "super priority corridor" and aims to ease traffic congestion and reduce pollution in the growing city. All metro stations have been named after historic women warriors, such as Rani Durgavati and Rani Avantibai Lodhi, to reflect the spirit of women-led progress. Across the world and in India, safe and reliable urban transport systems like metro rail have been shown to significantly enhance womens participation in the workforce and public life. By reducing travel time, improving safety, and offering affordable mobility, metros help bridge gender gaps in access to education, employment, and health services—thereby contributing to inclusive development. For the first week, the Indore Metro will be free for all passengers. Authorities have set fares at Rs 20 for two stations and Rs 30 beyond that.
