Admin, BMC ramp up pre-monsoon preparations

  • | Friday | 6th June, 2025

The district administration on Wednesday escalated flood and monsoon readiness with a citywide drain clean-up and region-wide emergency planning to prevent waterlogging, dam overflows, and rainfall-related disruptions this season. Divisional Commissioner Sanjeev Singh directed all districts in the Bhopal division to activate flood control rooms, appoint nodal officers, and ensure the rapid availability of resources for emergency action. In a video conference with collectors and officials, Singh stressed the importance of identifying and removing encroachments near rivers, culverts, and settlements prone to flooding during intense rainfall. He instructed that separate teams be created for relief and rescue operations, and connected through WhatsApp groups for better coordination and quicker inter-departmental response. District collectors were asked to assess the current status of all reservoirs and to draft detailed, time-bound plans for controlled water release during episodes of excessive rainfall. To prevent sudden dam overflows, Singh said monitoring must be continuous, with designated officers for each dam and timely alerts issued to local residents and authorities. Officials were also instructed to complete repairs, greasing, and staffing at dam sites, and to send hourly rainfall and water level data to a central monitoring hub. Meanwhile, Mayor Malti Rai reviewed the citys pre-monsoon drain-cleaning campaign, ordering the thorough clearance of all drains to ensure the uninterrupted flow of rainwater during the monsoon. She directed that debris be removed immediately after cleaning and instructed close surveillance of drains and surrounding areas to prevent clogging from weeds, silt, or solid waste. Rai emphasised full use of available machinery and manpower to ensure the drainage system functions efficiently across the city, particularly in vulnerable or low-lying neighbourhoods. Municipal officials have been asked to prioritise areas with a history of waterlogging, accelerate desilting where needed, and report daily progress until the monsoon begins.
