Water-starved Kokta residents block road in protest

  • | Monday | 23rd June, 2025

Over 100 residents, including women and children, blocked the bypass road near Kokta on Saturday morning to protest against a worsening water crisis in their neighbourhood. The demonstration began around 9:30 am and continued until noon, said eyewitnesses. The irate residents ended the blockade only after Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) and police officials intervened, promising swift redress. Residents said they had been grappling with poor water pressure for 25 days, despite repeated complaints. The tank here is useless. No one listens, said one protester. Many demonstrators were from the Kokta Multi housing complex, built by BMC. It comprises 12 blocks of MIG and LIG flats, with each block containing 36 units. They also raised concerns over unfulfilled promises made during flat allotment—such as CCTV installation and basic civic infrastructure, which remain absent even after several months. Theres no water, no security, and no respect for our grievances. This protest was our last resort, said Kirti Rajput, one of the leading voices at the sit-in. Officials who met the protesters have scheduled an evening meeting, assuring action on the water crisis and a review of other pending civic demands.
