Jal Ganga Campaign brings life back to fields at Manikhedi

  • | Tuesday | 1st July, 2025

The grassroots water conservation efforts under the Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan are quietly transforming farmlands and families, proving that sustainability and hope can walk hand in hand. For Arjun Singh, a farmer from Manikhedi village in Bhopal district, the monsoon no longer feels like a gamble. Once entirely dependent on erratic rainfall, his fortunes changed with a small yet powerful intervention: a farm pond built under the Jal Ganga campaign. With a capacity of 3,600 cubic metres and constructed at a cost of Rs 4.74 lakh, the pond now ensures reliable irrigation and the possibility of income through activities like fish farming. Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modis national call for environmental preservation and water conservation, and guided by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, the campaign has evolved into a peoples movement across Madhya Pradesh. As it draws to a close on June 30, it leaves behind thousands of such small, hopeful transformations – stories of empowerment, sustenance and dignity. Over the past three months, the initiative has gone far beyond building new ponds. It has revived age-old wells, stepwells and village tanks, and led to the cleaning of rivers and streams long neglected. Across the state, water tables are not only rising – so are the spirits of farming communities. At its heart, this campaign is a call to collective action and long-term thinking. Water, after all, is not just essential for agriculture or industry – it is the essence of life itself. Conserving it is not the responsibility of a few, but a shared social and ethical duty. In village after village, the slogan Jal Hai to Kal Hai now echoes with renewed meaning. And for farmers like Arjun Singh, the future is already taking root – with every drop, every harvest, and every act of care.
