Nandankanan Zoo gets two tiger cubs

BHUBANESWAR: The Nandankanan Zoo here on Saturday got two more tigers as tigress Ankita delivered the cubs. So, Megha and Bijaya have constant fight, zoo officials said.The male cub born to Megha was named Bahubali. Saif came to Nandankanan zoo from a zoo of Hyderabad.In another development, the zoo authorities on Saturday completed renovation of tiger enclosure by putting up extra iron mesh to prevent escape of tigers by scaling the mesh. "Ankita and Saif were allowed mating in October, 2017," zoo officials said. Ankita is fit and she is taking care of the baby tigers," said zoo deputy director Jayant Das.Zoo officials said sex of the cubs can't be known now.

Their father is zoo-born Saif.Zoo authorities said with the birth of two cubs, the tiger population there went up to 26 out of which eight are white tigers, 16 normal and two melanistic. "The health of the cubs is being monitored through CCTV as none enters the enclosure now. Ankita is fit and she is taking care of the baby tigers," said zoo deputy director Jayant Das.Zoo officials said sex of the cubs can't be known now. Incidentally, Ankita was born on the same day to tigress Sara. "Ankita and Saif were allowed mating in October, 2017," zoo officials said. Saif came to Nandankanan zoo from a zoo of Hyderabad.In another development, the zoo authorities on Saturday completed renovation of tiger enclosure by putting up extra iron mesh to prevent escape of tigers by scaling the mesh. In October last year, tigress Megha attempted to climb up the iron mesh to access her male partner Nandan.Following the incident, Megha was kept in a separate enclosure. Megha was Nandan's mate and she had given birth to two cubs, which are more than a year old now and they have been put on display at an enclosure with their father Nandan. Between Megha's and Nandan's enclosure is located enclosure of tigress Bijaya. So, Megha and Bijaya have constant fight, zoo officials said.The male cub born to Megha was named Bahubali.
