Bhubaneswar: 11 die, 17 injured in separate mishaps in Odisha

At least 11 persons were killed and 17 others injured in separate mishaps including road and rail accidents and drowning.In Angul district, a person was killed after a goods train carrying slags from Jindal Steel Plant in Angul derailed at Benagadia under Angul police station on Saturday. The incident happened when the bus carrying around 50 pilgrims from Cuttack, Kendrapara and Soro areas was returning from Ajmer. Our tracks are isolated from them.”A JSPL official said that the slag-laden train was going to Raigarh when the mishap took place. The points man, Sahu, was on duty at Benagadia railway level crossing. He could not stop it as the brake system of the train failed.

BHUBANESWAR: Saturday witnessed a series of accidents across the state. At least 11 persons were killed and 17 others injured in separate mishaps including road and rail accidents and drowning.In Angul district, a person was killed after a goods train carrying slags from Jindal Steel Plant in Angul derailed at Benagadia under Angul police station on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Binay Sahu, 32, of Jarada village in the district.Sources said the slag-laden train travelled in a wrong route and moved towards an under-construction railway track at Benagadia. The points man, Sahu, was on duty at Benagadia railway level crossing. He could not stop it as the brake system of the train failed. As many as 10 wagons and the engine derailed near the level crossings and killed Sahu on the spot.Jaideep Gupta, divisional railway manager, Sambalpur, said, “In no way railways authorities are responsible for the incident. The locomotive, the engine and the track belong to JSPL. Our tracks are isolated from them.”A JSPL official said that the slag-laden train was going to Raigarh when the mishap took place. “Compensation will be paid to the family of the deceased. Besides, we are investigating the cause of the accident,” he added.In Rayagada district, at least three persons of Amlapuram in Andhra Pradesh were killed after the car in which they were travelling collided head-on with a truck near Pitamahal square on the outskirts of the Rayagada town on Saturday morning.While two persons, including the driver, died on the spot, the third person succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at district headquarters hospital at Rayagada. They were on their way to Majhighariani temple in Rayagada town.In Jharsuguda, two persons of a family were killed and two others injured when their bike hit a Tata Magic van coming from opposite direction at Bhoimunda under Brajrajnagar police limits in the district on Saturday evening.All four were travelling in a single bike. Biranchi Bhatei, 35, of Basupali village under Lakhanpur block was riding the bike. His wife Parulata, 25, and son 7-year-old Anshuman died on the spot, while he and his daughter sustained injuries.In Bhadrak, four people drowned while taking bath in different water bodies. Three youths drowned while taking bath in Baitarani River near Nerada village under Bhandaripokhari block and the fourth one, a class VII girl, met watery grave in a village pond at Dangamala under Busudevpur block in the district.In Jajpur, a plus-II student of Vyasanagar College was hit by a speeding train while crossing railway tracks on a motorcycle near Chunabhati in Jajpur district. The incident occurred while he was returning after appearing examination.At least 15 persons were injured after a bus carrying pilgrims from Odisha fell off a bridge near Tata in Jharkhand late on Friday night. The incident happened when the bus carrying around 50 pilgrims from Cuttack, Kendrapara and Soro areas was returning from Ajmer.
