Deities go 'hungry' as Puri temple cooks protest

Out of nearly 23 different rituals that need to be performed in the morning, only two were performed early on Tuesday. While Monday's delay in conducting rituals was reportedly due to non-cooperation of a section of servitors over the Orissa high court's restrictions of their entry into the sanctum sanctorum, on Tuesday the shrine's cooks stopped preparing the deitie's food in protest against heavy losses incurred on Monday. BHUBANESWAR: Deities of the Jagannath Temple in Puri could not be offered bhog even on Tuesday evening as confusion raged following the reopening of the Jagamohan, triggering the ire of devotees and opposition parties who blamed the state government for failing to ensure that the temple functions smoothly.The deities have been 'hungry' since Monday afternoon and had not been fed till the time of filing the report, late on Tuesday evening.
