Odisha reels under intense heat

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha is reeling under extreme heat wave conditions with highest temperature crossing 43 degree Celsius in interior areas. Mercury in the city may hover close to 40 degree Celsius, Sahu said.“Strong and gusty surface wind speed reaching 35 to 45 kmph likely to prevail along and off Odisha coast. Cuttack recorded 38.5 degree Celsius.After minor relief from the heat in the past two days, the state capital on Saturday again saw rise in mercury level to 39.2 degree Celsius, two degree above normal. Besides, there are chances of thunder squall activities in some pockets of coastal and adjoining pockets. This may influence minor drop temperature levels.”Mercury at as many as nine places in the state, mostly in interior pockets, was hovering at over 41 to 43 degree Celsius.

The Met office has predicted high temperatures in the next few days.Director of regional IMD centre, Sarat Chandra Sahu said “A similar trend of high temperature will continue in the state for a week. Besides, there are chances of thunder squall activities in some pockets of coastal and adjoining pockets. This may influence minor drop temperature levels.”Mercury at as many as nine places in the state, mostly in interior pockets, was hovering at over 41 to 43 degree Celsius. Bolangir and Jharsuguda recorded highest day temperature of 43.4 and 43.2 degree Celsius respectively.According to the IMD, the other places recorded major rise in temperature during the daytime includes Sonepur (42.6 deg C), Sambalpur (42.2) and Titlagarh (42). Cuttack recorded 38.5 degree Celsius.After minor relief from the heat in the past two days, the state capital on Saturday again saw rise in mercury level to 39.2 degree Celsius, two degree above normal. Fishermen are advised to be cautious while venturing into the sea,” said IMD’s latest bulletin.Besides, IMD has also issued warning of thunder squall accompanied with hail and gusty surface wind speed reaching 50- 60 kmph likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Jagatsingpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Raygada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Khurda, Cuttack, Kendrapara and Koraput.
