Chilika boat tragedy: Death toll rises to six, 11 rescued

BHUBANESWAR: Death toll increased to six in the Chilika boat capsizing incident. The rescue operation is over, said official sources on Sunday.Nirmal Chandra Mishra, Khurda Collector, said 15 tourists and two boatmen were there on the boat. The rescue operation is over, " he added.He said a little girl Shradhanjali Das and her mother were fished out from Chilika on Saturday evening. “We had found two bodies from the Chilika water on Saturday night. He had ordered special relief commissioner and district administrations of Khurda and Ganjam on Saturday night to work in coordination to expedite rescue operations.

The rescue operation is over, " he added.He said a little girl Shradhanjali Das and her mother were fished out from Chilika on Saturday evening. Bodies of a male child, two girls and a woman have been fished out on Sunday, he added."More than 100 rescuers from Indian Navy , Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), Fire services and local fishermen were engaged in the rescue operation," he added.The incident took place around 5.30 pm on Saturday when the boat was bringing the passengers to Balugaon from Kalijai temple after Raja celebrations. The revellers were from Nayagarh district . The temple is located on an island in the lagoon.Nityanand Jena, a fire officer from Balugon, said the boat seemed to have lost its balance in the strong winds due to a squall occurred in the area.On Saturday night, an eight member team of the ODRAF from Chhatrapur in Ganjam district had rushed to the spot to assist the personnel of fire services in rescue operation.Manoj Tripathy, Balugaon community health centre in-charge, identified the girl as Shraddhanjali Das from Nayagarh district. He said five persons were shifted to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.Chief minister Naveen Patnaik has expressed deep grief at the death of one child in the incident. He had ordered special relief commissioner and district administrations of Khurda and Ganjam on Saturday night to work in coordination to expedite rescue operations. He also ordered free medical treatment to the injured.On Sunday, Naveen has announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of the kin of the deceased.
