BJB authorities want cops on campus till union polls

BHUBANESWAR: A day after clashes between two rival students' groups rocked BJB Autonomous College, the authorities on Tuesday said they would ask the government to deploy security personnel on its campus till the students' union election was over. He also said they had decided to form internal squads comprising teachers to keep an eye on the students' groups and their activities in the run-up to the election. "Police personnel have been deployed in the college after the pre-election violence on Monday. Maintaining peace is our priority now," he said.Mohanty said the college had 14 private security guards to man the science, arts and commerce blocks.

BHUBANESWAR: A day after clashes between two rival students' groups rocked BJB Autonomous College, the authorities on Tuesday said they would ask the government to deploy security personnel on its campus till the students' union election was over. The election is supposed to be held next month.Following the violence on campus on Monday, the college held an emergency meeting of its staff council to discuss ways of maintaining peace and security in the institute.Principal Prasanna Kumar Mohanty said they had taken a decision to increase security and check violence on campus. "Police personnel have been deployed in the college after the pre-election violence on Monday. We will urge the commissionerate police to consider our request and extend the deployment of the personnel till the students' union election is over. Maintaining peace is our priority now," he said.Mohanty said the college had 14 private security guards to man the science, arts and commerce blocks."We have six CCTV cameras on campus. We have requested the government to sanction funds for more cameras," he added. He also said they had decided to form internal squads comprising teachers to keep an eye on the students' groups and their activities in the run-up to the election."We will form around 12 squads to carry out this work. Each squad will have five members. Two squads will be in charge of the commerce block and five squads each will be engaged for the science and arts blocks," the principal added.The college has also decided to verify the address and phone number of the students during admission."Some students create a ruckus in the college and flee. When police want to call them for interrogation, their addresses turn out to be false," the principal further said.Six students were injured on Monday after two groups fought with each other on and outside the campus over the candidates for the election.
