Pangolin smuggling racket busted in Malkangiri

On December 22, 2018, police arrested four persons for smuggling a pangolin at Gunupur in Rayagada district. Investigation is on to find out the links of the group and to whom they had planned to sell the pangolin and others involved in the gang, said Mirage.On December 13, 2018, seven persons were arrested for smuggling a pangolin weighing 12 kg. KORAPUT: Forest officials busted a pangolin smuggling racket and arrested eight persons and seized a pangolin from them in Malkangiri district on Tuesday night.Officials said they had reliable information about the group possessing a pangolin and accordingly conducted raided the team in Pogurkanda village under Kalimela forest range.“Our special team raided the place where group members were staying and rescued the pangolin that weighed around 6 kg,” said Pradeep Mirase, divisional forest officer, Malkangiri.According to the officer, all the arrested persons belong to different places of the district and they captured the pangolin from Kalimela forest range. It is one of the most trafficked mammals in the world. Officials said the pangolin is listed as an endangered species and mostly found in the hilly forests of Koraput, Rayagada , Malkangiri, Kandhamal and Mayurbhanj districts.Sources said there is huge demand for pangolin in the international market as people believe that wearing ornaments made up of its scales heals the body.
