BHUBANESWAR: Director general of police, Goa, Muktesh Chander said police forces are equipped to handle cybercrime but the dimension of such crimes is expanding and increasing so fast that police have to keep pace with it.Making a presentation on cybercrime before officers of Odisha Police at the 61st Senior Police Officers’ Conference here on Friday, he said, “We are also worried about cyber warfare and attack on critical information infrastructure of our country using cyber means. It has happened abroad and there is no reason that it will not happen in India”.“The police force should gear up to tackle cybercrime. We have to improve our skill set, technology, equipment to keep pace with the fast-changing world of cybercrime,” he added.He said police need to have a mechanism to deal with online fraud and other cybercrimes. “The most important challenge is attack on financial institutions. Cosmos bank attack in Pune is an example. Banks should take a lot of security measures to stop this problem. Everyone should take some security steps to make their computer safe,” he added.Director general of police (Odisha) R P Sharma said Odisha Police has already started working on strengthening its capacity to check cybercrimes. “We are also working on other issues like keeping an eye on social media, checking road accidents, anti-corruption strategies and other issues,” he added.Besides investigating the cybercrime issue, there were discussions on social media monitoring, improving road safety and other policing issues, paperless police station and emergency response system and police co-ordination.Prateek B Deshpande, additional DCP, state intelligence department (SID) Maharashtra police, delivered a talk on the monitoring of social media. At the end of the session, there was an open house discussion.
